Emus

Emu

Curious, Intelligent, and Full of Personality

At The Naked Acre Homestead, every species on the farm brings something entirely different to daily life. Some are calm and quiet, others are energetic and demanding, our emus somehow manage to be both at the same time.

Curious, observant, and incredibly expressive, emus have quickly become one of the most unique additions to the homestead.

Raising them is a long term commitment built around patience, proper socialization, secure housing, and understanding their natural behaviours as they mature.

Our Emus

Our current mob consists of two full blood sisters, both DNA sexed females, forming the foundation of our emu program.

Older Sister:

Yzma: Hatched April 9th, 2026

Younger Sister:

Madame Zeroni: Hatched April 21st, 2026

Although still young, both girls already display their own personalities, behaviors, and levels of confidence. Watching them grow and develop together has been one of the most rewarding experiences on the farm so far.

About Emus

Native to Australia, emus are the second largest bird species in the world and are well known for their intelligence, speed, curiosity, and adaptability.

Unlike many poultry species, emus mature slowly and develop strong social bonds over time. They are naturally inquisitive animals and are constantly observing their surroundings, investigating movement, and learning routines.

Young emus require careful management during their early development, including proper nutrition, secure fencing, protection from weather extremes, and gradual socialization.

Temperament and Behaviour

Emus are highly individual animals, each with their own comfort levels and personalities.

We prioritize:

- Calm & Consistent interaction

- Building trust through routine and observation

- Allowing natural curiosity to develop confidently

- Providing space for healthy movement and exploration

While emus can be incredibly social and interactive, they also require patience and respect. Much of working with them comes from understanding body language and allowing trust to build naturally over time.

Future Goals and Genetics

Although our program is still in its early stages, we have long term goals for responsibly growing our mob in the years ahead.

As we continue developing the program, we hope to eventually incorporate white or blonde genetics into future breeding plans. These colour variations are something we greatly admire and would love to work with as our experience and infrastructure continue to grow.

As with every species on our homestead, any future breeding decisions will prioritize:

- Overall health and structural quality
- Stable, manageable temperaments
- Strong growth and development
- Responsible long-term planning

Our Approach

Our emu program is being built slowly and intentionally.

We focus on:

- Proper nutrition and developmental care
- Safe, secure, and climate-appropriate housing
- Socialization and trust-building
- Learning and adapting as the birds mature

Emus are not a species that can be rushed. They require time, observation, and a willingness to continually learn alongside them.

More Than Just a Large Bird

While emus are often admired for their size and unusual appearance, there is far more to them than that.

They are thoughtful, expressive animals with an incredible sense of awareness. From their curious nature to the way they interact with each other and their environment, they bring a completely different energy to the homestead.

Watching them grow from tiny striped chicks into powerful adult birds is a process we are incredibly excited to experience.

Looking Ahead

As Yzma and Madame Zeroni continue to mature, they will help shape the future direction of our emu program here at The Naked Acre Homestead.

For now, our focus remains on giving them the best possible start, continuing to learn, and enjoying every stage of the journey alongside them.

A Unique Addition to the Homestead

Emus may not be considered a traditional homestead animal, but they represent something we value deeply at The Naked Acre Homestead. Growth, learning, and the willingness to explore new challenges responsibly.

They encourage patience, adaptability, and observation.

And in many ways, that reflects exactly what building a diverse and thoughtful homestead is all about.
