Mixed Goose Gaggle
Breed Background
Our mixed goose gaggle is made up of both purebred geese and intentional crosses. While these birds are not part of formal livestock conservation programs themselves, many descend from heritage and conservation-listed parent breeds. Together, they represent the practical, adaptable side of homesteading geese and showcase how different traits can combine to create well-rounded companion and farm birds.
Pilgrim Goose
The Pilgrim goose is a North American auto-sexing breed developed in the early 20th century. Males hatch light yellow and mature white, while females hatch darker and mature to gray, making sex identification straightforward from an early age. Pilgrims are medium-sized geese known for their calm temperament, good foraging ability, and suitability for small farms. They are moderate egg layers and valued for being easy to manage and family-friendly.
Embden Goose
The Embden goose is a large, white goose originally developed in Germany and widely used worldwide as a utility meat breed. Embdens are fast-growing, heavy-bodied birds with excellent foraging ability and strong cold hardiness. They are known for their alert nature and can be assertive, which historically made them effective watchdogs on farms. Embdens also contribute size, strength, and robust growth when crossed with other breeds.
French Toulouse (Production Type)
The French Toulouse goose, specifically the non-dewlap or production type, is a more streamlined and active version of the traditional Toulouse. Unlike the exhibition dewlap lines, production Toulouse are bred for practicality, offering good body size while maintaining mobility and foraging ability. They are calm, steady birds that contribute substance, growth, and a balanced temperament without sacrificing function on pasture.
White Sebastopol
The Sebastopol Goose is best known for its distinctive curled and flowing feathering. While often considered ornamental, Sebastopols also bring a notably calm and gentle disposition to a flock. White Sebastopols, in particular, add visual contrast and softness, and when used in crosses, can contribute both unique feather texture and a more relaxed, companion-friendly temperament.
Our Mixed Geese
Our gaggle includes the following birds and crosses:
Purebred
Maria — Pilgrim
Bonanza — Embden
Wild Bill — White Sebastopol
Rawhide — Buff Toulouse
Sugarfoot — Grey Toulouse
These purebred birds help anchor the flock with recognizable breed traits. The Sebastopol contributes its distinctive feathering and calmer disposition, while the Toulouse bring size, steadiness, and a more grounded temperament.
Crosses
Elvira, Gunsmoke, Cheyenne — White Sebastopol × Buff Toulouse
Bronco — Buff Chinese × Embden
Django — Buff Pilgrim × Chinese
These crosses combine traits from multiple established breeds. Sebastopol and Toulouse crosses often blend ornamental feathering with heavier body type and calm demeanor. Chinese crosses typically contribute alertness, longevity, and strong vocalization, while Embden and Pilgrim influence size, foraging ability, and overall hardiness. The result is a diverse group of geese with varied appearances, personalities, and strengths.
Our Goals for This Gaggle
Our goal with this group is not breed standardization, but balance. We aim to develop healthy, color-diverse, and even-tempered geese suited for homestead life and human interaction. These birds are selected for sound structure, adaptability, and companion-friendly personalities rather than strict conformity to any single breed standard.
This gaggle reflects the reality of many working homesteads: practical geese with deep heritage roots, raised with intention, care, and respect for the breeds that shaped them.
