The Chinese Goose

Chinese Goose

Breed Overview

Chinese geese are descended from the Asian wild Swan Goose and are widely regarded as one of the most graceful and elegant domestic goose breeds. Their long, arched necks and upright posture have earned them the nickname “Swan Geese.” Known internationally as Höckergänse in Germany and Oies de Chine in France, they have a long history of domestication and global distribution.

Chinese geese were present in North America during the Colonial period, with records indicating that George Washington kept them at Mount Vernon. Both Brown and White varieties were admitted to the American Poultry Association’s Standard of Perfection in 1874, and they were famously exhibited as “Chinese Swans” at the 1876 Centennial International Exhibition in Philadelphia.

This breed is refined and compact, with a smooth, keelless breast, a high-set tail, and a distinctive knob at the base of the bill. The long, slender neck is symmetrically arched and carried upright, contributing to the breed’s alert and energetic appearance. Mature ganders average approximately 12 pounds, while geese average around 10 pounds.

Chinese geese are available in two recognized color varieties. The Brown Chinese is rich brown and fawn with a dark stripe down the back of the neck and a black knob and bill. The White Chinese has pure white plumage, blue eyes, and bright orange bills, knobs, and feet.

They are the most prolific egg layers among goose breeds, producing approximately 40–100 large white eggs per year under good management. Chinese geese are hardy and active foragers, often used as “weeder geese” due to their appetite for grasses and herbaceous plants. They are alert, vocal, and widely valued as effective watchdog geese. While some lines can be assertive, birds handled from a young age often become personable and strongly bonded to their caretakers.

Our Chinese Geese

Our Chinese goose gaggle consists of four birds:

Brown Chinese:
    •    Jareth    •    Sarah    •    Zorro

White Chinese:

    •    Lone Ranger

Together, they represent both recognized color varieties and showcase the breed’s characteristic elegance, vocal nature, and strong presence within a mixed goose flock.

Our Breeding Goals

Our goal with Chinese geese is to maintain healthy, well-structured birds that reflect the breed’s natural vitality, productivity, and alert temperament. We prioritize sound structure, good fertility, and calm, manageable personalities, particularly through early handling and thoughtful flock management.

Chinese geese play an important role in our homestead as productive layers, active foragers, and natural guardians. Through responsible care and selective breeding, we aim to preserve the traits that have made this breed both practical and iconic for centuries.
