The Button Quail

Button Quail (Chinese Painted Quail)

Species Overview

Button quail, also known as Chinese Painted Quail, are one of the smallest domesticated gamebirds in the world. Native to parts of Asia, they are ground-dwelling birds that are highly active, fast-moving, and well-suited to aviary or enclosed systems. Despite their size, button quail are hardy and prolific when managed correctly.

Button quail are known for their wide range of color mutations, including wild-type, silver, white, blue-faced, and many other patterned variations. They are typically kept in pairs or small groups and are valued for their compact size, rapid maturity, and fascinating behaviours.

These birds are not strong fliers but are quick and agile, requiring secure housing and thoughtful layout to reduce stress and injury. With proper care, button quail can be long-lived and productive within a managed setting.

Our Button Quail

We currently have 12 button quail in a variety of colors, representing the foundation of our future covey. As a newer addition to the homestead, we are carefully observing temperament, compatibility, and overall performance as the birds settle in.

Our Focus

Our button quail program is focused on building a healthy, diverse covey with strong vitality and good adaptability to managed environments. As we gain experience with our lines and refine our breeding approach, we hope to offer button quail in the future to others interested in small-scale aviary birds. Our emphasis will remain on health, stability, and responsible expansion rather than rapid production.
