Our Guinea Pigs

Small Herd, Intentional Care

At The Naked Acre Homestead, even our smallest animals are raised with the same level of care, intention, and respect as the rest of the farm.

Our guinea pigs may not take up much space, but they bring a surprising amount of personality, structure, and purpose to our homestead.

They are both companions and part of a developing small animal program, helping us explore responsible breeding, animal care, and herd management on a smaller scale.

Our Herd

Our current herd includes one boar and a group of sows, each contributing to the foundation we are building.

Boar: 

Bora Bora - a teddy-coated guinea pig with a dense, textured coat and a sturdy build

Sows:

Antigua - American short hair
Dominica - American short hair
Grenada - American short hair
Trinidad - American short hair
Barbados - American short hair
Bahamas - Abyssinian

This mix of coat types allows us to observe a range of traits, both in appearance and care requirements, while building a balanced and well-rounded herd.

Breeds and Types

Our herd includes a combination of coat varieties, each offering something a little different.

The Teddy guinea pig is known for its dense, springy coat and slightly more textured appearance, giving it a distinctive look and feel.

The Abyssinian guinea pig is recognized for its rosettes and more expressive, often bold personality.

Our American or short-haired guinea pigs represent the most common and practical coat type, valued for their smooth coats, ease of care, and clean overall appearance.

This variety gives us flexibility as we continue developing our herd, allowing us to observe which traits best align with our long-term goals.

Temperament and Handling

Temperament is a key focus in our program.

We prioritize animals that are:
- Calm and approachable
- Comfortable with handling
- Social within the herd
- Adaptable to a homestead environment

Guinea pigs are naturally social animals, and maintaining a stable group dynamic is essential to their well-being. Regular interaction helps ensure they remain confident, manageable, and well-adjusted.

Our Approach

Like everything else on our homestead, our approach to raising guinea pigs is intentional and long-term.

We focus on:
- Clean & well-maintained housing
- Proper nutrition & consistent care
- Close observation of health, growth, & behavior
- Thoughtful planning when it comes to breeding decisions

We are not rushing expansion. Instead, we are building a herd that reflects quality, consistency, and responsible animal husbandry.
