Muscovy Duck
Breed Overview
Muscovy ducks are a unique and ancient domestic duck species, originating in Central and South America. Unlike most domestic ducks, they are not descended from the Mallard, which gives them several distinct traits. Muscovies are known for their large size, strong bodies, and the red caruncles (fleshy facial markings) found on mature birds, especially drakes.
They are quiet compared to other ducks, communicating mostly through hissing and soft trills rather than loud quacking, which makes them well suited to homestead and mixed-farm environments. Muscovies are excellent foragers and natural pest controllers, consuming insects, flies, and larvae with enthusiasm.
This breed is highly valued for its lean, flavorful meat, often compared more closely to beef or veal than traditional duck. Hens are strong setters and attentive mothers, frequently raising large broods with little human intervention. Muscovies are hardy, adaptable, and capable fliers, preferring to roost off the ground when given the option.
Color varieties are diverse, with black-and-white pied and solid white being among the most common on farms and homesteads.
Our Muscovy Ducks
Our Muscovy flock includes nine birds, with a balanced mix of drakes and hens:
Drakes:
• Moscato (Black & White) • Zinfandel (Black & White)
Hens:
• Facelift (Black & White) • Botox (Black & White) • Chardonnay (White)
• Sauvignon (White) • Merlot (White) • Shiraz (White) • Rosé (White)
Together, they showcase both pied and white colorations, along with the calm, observant personalities Muscovies are known for.
Our Breeding Goals
Our Muscovy breeding program focuses on hardy, well-grown birds with strong foraging instincts, good fertility, and reliable broodiness. We prioritize calm temperaments, sound structure, and healthy feathering, while maintaining the breed’s natural ability to thrive with minimal intervention.
Muscovies are an integral part of our farm ecosystem, contributing to pest control, meat production, and sustainable flock management. Through thoughtful breeding and hands-on care, we aim to raise Muscovies that are productive, resilient, and true to the breed’s long-standing heritage.
